This has raised the public interest in green smoothie recipes because of health benefits. Smoothies can keep cool and slip some nutrition into any diet.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Recipes from green smoothies are a wonderful way to enjoy the wholesome sweetness of fruits with the added health benefits you get from eating leafy greens. Green smoothie recipes are very popular in the raw foods movement.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;How do you make a green smoothie? It is pretty simple. I personally start with one banana and then I add some berries for their gorgeous color, marvelous taste, and the spectrum of anti-oxidants they contain. I buy my berries in the frozen fruits section of the supermarket. My current favorites are wild blueberries, red raspberries, and dark sweet cherries.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Blend your banana and berries with some water and then add your greens. Good choices for mild greens that you will not even taste in your smoothie include some chopped romaine lettuce, a small head of baby bok choy, or a few handfuls of baby spinach. If you use a Vita-mix or other high speed blender, the greens get completely blended in (this is a great way to get your kids to secretly eat some healthy veggies, by the way). Kale is incredibly nutritious and is a wonderful addition to a green smoothie, too.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;One of the great things about green smoothies is that there are so many variations. You could skip the banana and use other fruits such as pineapple or mango and you could use coconut milk or coconut water or raw milk kefir or organic plain yogurt (or a combination) for the liquid. You can also add some protein such as ground hemp seeds and then you have a quick and nutritionally balanced meal or snack any time of the day. The analysis shows us that good dietary habits play an important role in normal brain function. Consuming a Mediterranean diet is now found to lower our risk of cognitive decline, as well as decreasing the risk of progressing to Alzheimer's disease.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The study, published in the February issue of Archives of Neurology, suggests that a combination of factors help keep our memories sharp. Eating a Mediterranean diet may be beneficial for several reasons, including lower cholesterol, beneficial omega 3 fatty acids from fish, and alcohol, also shown to be beneficial for healthy blood vessels.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Nikolaos Scarmeas, M.D., and colleagues at Columbia University Medical Center, New York conducted an analysis of 1,393 individuals with normal cognition between 1992 and 1999. They also analyzed 482 individuals with mild cognitive decline.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Of the 1393 individuals with normal brain function and memory, 275 developed difficulty with memory. The segment of the study group adhering closely to a Mediterranean diet had a 28 percent lower risk of cognitive decline. Those who followed a Mediterranean diet in the middle group had a 17 percent lower risk.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The individual who already showed memory decline and had the highest intake of Mediterranean food had a 48 percent less chance of progressing to Alzheimer's disease, and those in the middle had a 45 percent less chance of Alzheimer's than individuals adhering least to a Mediterranean diet.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;This is not the first study to show the health benefits associated with following a Mediterranean diet. Past studies show lower risk of heart disease from transitioning to a Mediterranean diet. The results show that curcumin, a popular Asian spice, might be considered as a dietary means to protect from breast cancer for women exposed to estrogen and progestin (synthetic progesterone) used as hormone replacement therapy following menopause.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Researchers from University of Missouri found that curcumin delayed and reduced the incidence of hormone related tumors in mouse studies. Curcumin blocked the production of a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) known to promote and support hormone related tumors and other types of cancer. Curcumin derived from turmeric also prevented changes in breast tissue associated with the hormone progestin and considered abnormal.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Salman Hyder, professor of biomedical sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center says, "Approximately 6 million women in the United States use hormone replacement therapy to treat the symptoms of menopause. This exposure to progestin will predispose a large number of post-menopausal women to future &lt;strong&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.emaxhealth.com/98"&gt;development of breast cancer&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;. The results of our study show that women could potentially take curcumin to protect themselves from developing progestin-accelerated tumors."&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Given the high numbers of women who take hormone replacement therapy, a simple dietary intervention using curcumin should be tested further to find the protective benefits for reducing breast cancer risk associated with taking estrogen and progestin, as suggested by the study authors. Previous studies suggest curcumin from turmeric may protect against a variety of cancers. The &lt;a href="http://www.santemontreal.qc.ca/En/"&gt;Healthy Agency of Montréal&lt;/a&gt; noted again this morning showing what types of food the citizens have chosen to consume between 2002 to 2007. The study focused particularly on foods selected for their value added for a healthy diet, including fruits and vegetables, milk and cheese, whole grain bread and legumes.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The health statistics don't look good at all in Montreal. Nearly 70% in the city do not consume fruits and vegetables 5 or more times per day, as suggested by Canada's Food Guide. Government educational campaigns aimed to prompt people to follow healthy diet plans have been done before too. However, as the 200-2007 statistics show the situation was bleak then and has not improved since. The report also shows that 40% of the population in Montreal within walking distance has no access to a market that sells fruit and vegetables.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;However, there is some good news when it comes to whole grains consumptions. Just over half of the people in the city consume whole grain bread once daily, and nearly 60% of the population eats vegetables once or more per week.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Whether one keeps his diet healthy or no is a personal matter. However, your choices of food have significant impact on chronic disease. The government makes these studies to better address the public health. However, as shown in the study, income, education, sex and being a couple or not greatly influence eating habits. With factors like this, it will take a lot more than just information messages and outreach to convince people to eat healthy. For many, it means eat differently.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The report reveals that in general, women seem to eat healthier than men. But on a more encouraging note, the gap seems to diminish with time. Also, healthy foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables are not considered very popular among young people between the ages of 15 to 24. Only milk and cheese are consumed in good portions recommended for this age group.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The Public Health Department of Montreal was assisted with the University of Montreal in producing this report on healthy dietary habits. Together they interviewed about 1,000 people in the city aged 15 and older.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The results of this study highlights the urgent need to do more targeted campaigns to help the citizens of Montreal to improve the quality of food in their daily diet. The two oils were compared in a sixteen week study, each showing separate and distinct benefits for older, overweight &lt;strong&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.emaxhealth.com/23/9696.html"&gt;diabetic women&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The new study showed that diabetic women can lose weight by supplementing with CLA and safflower oil. Each of the dietary oils contains polyunsaturated fat (PUFA). Consuming good fat in the right amounts has been associated with a variety of health benefits from past studies, including weight loss.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The newest study from Ohio State University researchers showed that women who simply took safflower oil supplements for sixteen weeks, lost 2-4 pounds of belly fat and lowered blood sugar levels an average of 11 to 19 points. Fat that accumulates in the mid section is the most harmful when it comes to diabetes and risk of cardiovascular disease.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Senior study author Martha Belury, professor of human nutrition at Ohio State University says, “Making this subtle change in the intake of high-quality dietary fats in an effort to alter body composition is both achievable and affordable to postmenopausal women in the United States who are managing the difficult combination of obesity and diabetes. “ A simple change of diet to include beneficial oils is both attainable and achievable to promote weight loss and lower blood sugar levels for diabetic women.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Safflower oil promoted loss of belly fat, and CLA, found in highest quantities in grass fed beef and dairy, including eggs, helped with overall weight loss and reduced body fat in the women. For the study, the women were asked not to change their diet or exercise habits. One supplement was given for sixteen weeks, followed by the other to accurately measure the weight loss effect in the diabetic women studied. The women took one and two-thirds teaspoon of either oil.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;“I never would have imagined such a finding. This study is the first to show that such a modest amount of a linoleic acid-rich oil may have a profound effect on body composition in women,” says Dr. Belury.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The benefit of safflower oil for weight loss may be due to the ability of the oil to increase a hormone called adiponectin which helps the body burn fat more efficiently. The study "Intentional Exposure to Loud Music: The 2nd MTV.com Survey Reveals an Opportunity to Educate," from Vanderbilt's Roland Eavey, M.D., is being released today in the "Journal of Pediatrics".&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Eavey conducted the research in 2007 while working at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard; it is a follow-up to his groundbreaking 2002 MTV survey. "Hearing loss is so prevalent that it has become the norm," said Eavey, director of the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;"We know where we are headed; it would be a miracle if we don't wind up with problems later on. Studies show that 90 percent of males age 60 and over now have hearing loss." Nearly half of 2,500 MTV.com respondents experienced symptoms such as tinnitus or hearing loss after loud music exposure and hearing loss was considered a problem by 32 percent of respondents.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Eavey's study found the media as the most informative source about prevention of potential hearing loss and the health care community as the least likely source, even though respondents said they would change behavior if a health care professional alerted them to the problem. "Since our last study we have learned that enough people still are not yet aware, but that more are becoming aware, especially through the help of the media," Eavey said.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;"We have learned that the audience does use public health behaviors like sunscreen, designated drivers and seatbelts and that the health care community is the least likely source of informing patients about hearing loss, so we have an excellent opportunity to start educating patients."&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;As a health care provider, Eavey suggests alerting patients that "hearing loss from excessive sound volume is preventable ... and once it happens, the loss is permanent and cannot be reversed. Even hearing aids might not help that type of hearing loss and the ringing of the ears that can occur."&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Seventy-five percent of respondents owned an MP3 player, with 24 percent listening to their music player for more than 15 hours a week. Nearly half of the respondents said they use their player at 75 percent to 100 percent of its maximum volume capacity, which exceeds government regulations for occupational sound levels.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;If external sounds such as subway noise or street traffic compete with the music, then the volume is turned up even higher, according to 89 percent of persons surveyed.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;"It is kind of like the bus is heading down towards the brick wall and you can see that the crash is going to come. According to the International Journal of Obesity mothers who struggle with weight are more likely to have daughters who become obese. The same holds true for father and son. Childhood obesity does not seem to be genetic, but rather the result of influence from the parent of the same sex.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The study authors says the findings are “exciting” - understanding that childhood obesity is not genetic means taking a close look at treating parents, and is an opportunity to find a cure for the obesity epidemic. Combating obesity in children who are likely to become obese adults should be more easily accomplished by helping mom or dad recognize behaviors that influence their children toward becoming obese.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;According to study director Terry Wilkin, "These findings could turn our thinking on childhood obesity dramatically on its head. Money and resources have focused on children over the past decade in the belief that obese children become obese adults, and that prevention of obesity in children will solve the problem in adulthood”. Wilkin says we”will need to focus on changing the behaviour of the adult if we want to combat obesity in the child.”&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The research showing that childhood obesity is not genetic, but is influenced by parents of the same sex comes from the EarlyBird Diabetes Study. When researchers looked at obesity rates between mothers who are overweight and their sons, and fathers with obesity and their daughters, they did not find a pattern supporting the role of genes as a cause for childhood obesity. Terry Wilkin explains, "Any genetic link between obese parents and their children would be indiscriminate of gender.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The study authors concluded, “Childhood obesity today seems to be largely confined to those whose same-sex parents are obese”, after looking at 226 parents and one child. The researchers found significant correlation between mothers who were overweight, but not their sons. The same findings held true for obesity risk of sons whose father’s were overweight.
